Gunaikurnai

"Yumma" — /yoo-mah/

About this Country

Gunaikurnai Country covers the whole of Gippsland — from the alps to the lakes to the promontory. Five clans (Brataualung, Brayakaulung, Brabralung, Tatungalung, Krauatungalung) share the language.

Borun the pelican carried his canoe from the mountains to the sea and heard a tapping — Tuk the musk duck, who became his wife. Their children became the Gunaikurnai people.

Cultural protocols

Travelling with respect

Yiruk (Wilsons Prom) is shared country with Bunurong. Fires only in provided rings. Water is sacred — take only what you need.

Please

Two names, one place

Say Yiruk and Wamoon together — the Prom belongs to both Gunaikurnai and Bunurong.

Please

Pack out everything

Wilsons Prom is a Marine National Park. Even food scraps disrupt wombat and emu-wren.

Consider

Ceremony at Tidal River

Rangers sometimes hold Welcome. Pause and listen — you are welcome to join respectfully.

Please don't

Rock stacking / cairns

Please don't build cairns on beaches. They confuse ranger surveys and disrupt shorebirds.
